Understanding each-way and place terms
Each-way bets pay out if your horse wins or finishes in the top few positions. The number of places and the fraction of the odds (usually 1/4 or 1/5) vary depending on the type of race and the number of runners.
- Handicaps: Races with 16 or more runners usually pay four places.
- Non-handicaps: These often pay fewer places, even with a large field.
- Extra places: Many bookmakers offer “Enhanced Place Terms” on big races like the Grand National. Check if the operator is paying five or six places instead of the standard four.
- Non-runners: If horses are withdrawn before the start, the bookmaker may reduce the number of places they pay out.
Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) exclusions
Best Odds Guaranteed ensures that if you take a price on a horse and the Starting Price (SP) ends up being higher, you are paid at the bigger odds. While this is a common feature, the rules are not the same everywhere.
- Time limits: Most bookmakers only apply BOG to bets placed after a certain time, such as 8 am or 9 am on the day of the race.
- Market restrictions: BOG rarely applies to ante-post bets, international racing, or “enhanced” price boosts.
- Winning caps: There is often a daily limit on how much extra you can win through BOG. Check the “General Betting Rules” on the site to see if this cap is £1,000 or £50,000.
Ante-post vs day-of-race markets
Ante-post markets allow you to bet on major races weeks or months in advance. While the odds are often higher, the risks are different from betting on the day.
- Ante-post: If your horse does not run, you usually lose your stake. Only bet here if the bookmaker is running a “Non-Runner No Bet” (NRNB) promotion.
- Day-of-race: These markets typically open the day before or the morning of the event. If your horse is withdrawn, your stake is returned. However, “Rule 4” deductions may be applied to your winnings if other horses are pulled out of the race late.
Greyhound racing and track coverage
Many bookmakers in this list cover British and Irish racing, but greyhound markets often have their own rules.
- Payout limits: Maximum winnings for greyhounds are often significantly lower than for horse racing.
- BOG for dogs: Do not assume Best Odds Guaranteed applies to greyhounds; many operators exclude them entirely.
- Live streaming: Check if the bookmaker requires a minimum bet (usually £1) to watch the race stream, or if it is free to all customers with a funded account.
